If you’re planning a family photo session in Crystal Lake, IL, you probably already have a picture in your head of how it will go. Everyone in coordinating colors, smiling, looking right at the camera.
Then reality shows up.
I know, because I’m a mom of four, and three of my four are girls. When I pull out the camera for our own family pictures, you can bet one child is complaining that her outfit is too this or too that, another says her hair isn’t just so, and at least one has the “do we really have to do this right now?” attitude.
If that sounds like your house, take a deep breath. It’s normal, and it doesn’t ruin your photos. Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments, when the kids stop performing (or complaining) and start being themselves. From year of experience as a photographer as well as with my own kids, I’ve learned what actually helps a session run smoothly, and I’m sharing my five biggest tips below.

The good news is that a smooth session is mostly decided before I ever pick up my camera. A little planning around sleep, snacks, and expectations goes a long way, especially with toddlers and preschoolers. Here is what I tell every family I work with.
1. Keep Nap Schedules Steady Before Your Photos
Tired toddlers and photo sessions do. not. mix.
The easiest thing you can do is keep your child’s nap schedule the same in the days leading up to your session. If you’ve booked a later evening session, like a sunset session, push naps back a little each day for about three days beforehand. That way your little one is well rested when we start.
A rested child has more patience, more giggles, and a lot more willingness to let me capture the real them. It’s a small change that sets the tone for everything else.

2. Skip the Sugar (and Save a Snack for When You Need It)
Sugar plus no nap can create the perfect storm for tantrums. If you can avoid it, skip sugary foods right before your session.
Instead, plan a snack as a little incentive, and here’s the trick: don’t pull it out at the start! Save it for when we need it, like when a little one’s energy is fading or someone needs a reason to rejoin the group. A short snack break can also turn into a great photo opportunity, because kids snacking, sharing, and being silly are exactly the moments you’ll love looking back on.

3. What Do Kids Do During a Family Photo Session? Give Them an Activity They Love
Instead of asking kids to stand still and smile, let’s give them something to do. For at-home sessions, we choose one or two activities your kids already love. That might be drawing with chalk, blowing bubbles, or swinging on their favorite swing.
When kids are busy doing something they enjoy, they forget about the camera, and that’s when I get real smiles and real connection between siblings.
Even if you’re planning a family photo session in Crystal Lake, IL at a park or nature preserve, think about a favorite game or toy that can come along. Parents, you don’t need to stress about posing. Join in the fun and let me do the work.

4. What Should We Wear for Family Photos? Plan Outfits and Hair Ahead of Time
If your house is anything like mine, outfits and hair are where the drama starts.
A few things to help: talk about what everyone is wearing a few days before the session, not the morning of. Let each child have a little say within the colors you’ve chosen so they feel good in what they are wearing. Do hair the night before (braids to make waves or curls) or early in the day so no one is rushed. Then just spruce up before it’s time to go.
Lastly, remind everyone that a little messy hair from running and playing is part of the charm. When a child feels comfortable, it shows in their face.

5. What If My Kids Have a Meltdown During Family Photos?
Even with great preparation, things happen, and that’s okay!
At a recent session, a little boy fell off a rock he was standing on and pulled his little brother down with him. There were instant tears. We stopped right away and made sure everyone was okay. We brushed them off and took a couple of minutes for the boys to calm down and regulate their emotions. Then we got back to having fun 😊
That’s really the secret.
There’s no scolding, no rushing, and no pressure to smile through tears. A short reset is often all it takes to turn a rough moment around, and the session picks right back up.

We start the session with warming up. I like to introduce myself to your kids and give them a chance to warm up to me a little before I pull out my camera. Then, we start slow. I try to make it fun for the kids so if we are at home, we’ve come up with an activity your kids already enjoy and if we are at an outdoor location, we play fun games that keep the kids engaged and having a good time or snuggling with you if that’s what they prefer.
A typical session with me lasts about an hour, but I don’t put a timeframe around my sessions. Some families take a while to warm up, and others hit the ground running, so we go with the flow. I end the session when I feel I have a full gallery for mom, not when a clock runs out.
We end every session on a positive note with “prizes” for the kids, and it’s always a favorite. While they dig through my treasure basket to pick theirs, I show you any products you might be interested in. Being able to touch, hold, and flip through an album makes it so much easier to picture your photos in your home. Then, one week after your session, you’re invited to your gallery reveal, where you get to see everything we captured and choose how you want to enjoy your photos in your home.
My goal is simple: I capture the things you will want to remember when your kids aren’t kids anymore. That includes the big smiles, and it also includes the chalk-covered hands, the sibling hugs, and the silly faces.
