If you’ve been thinking about summer family photos but haven’t quite pulled the trigger yet, this one is for you.
Maybe you’ve been waiting for the right time. Maybe you’re not sure your kids will cooperate. Maybe you’ve just been telling yourself you’ll get around to it, and somehow another summer keeps slipping by. Whatever the reason, I want to make this feel simple, because it really can be, and I want to show you exactly what’s possible when you stop waiting and just do it.
But first, I have to tell you something.
I Almost Didn’t Do Our Session Last Summer.
My kids didn’t want to go. There was complaining, there was negotiating, and there was the very specific kind of mom-herding that never makes it into the photos but absolutely makes it into your memory. I had a vision, and my kids had zero interest in cooperating with it! Classic 🤣
I pushed anyway, and it turned into the sweetest little adventure. The weather was perfect, the light was golden, and once my kids had a little room to just be themselves, everything shifted.
They loosened up. They started laughing. Levi was running ahead with his sisters, being exactly and fully himself. I got close on his curls. I photographed his little feet in the grass. I caught him mid-laugh in a way I will never forget 🥹
A couple of weeks later, life changed in an instant. Levi was diagnosed with Leukemia. One night, laying in the hospital bed next to Levi, I found myself scrolling back through those photos, and I just kept thinking: I am so glad I pushed us to do this. I am so glad I got close on those curls.
He is just growing his hair back now. But the curls are gone 😭
I would not have remembered exactly what they looked like. Not really. The specific way they fell over his ears, the softness of them, the way they caught the light that evening: that would have faded the way childhood details always do, quietly and without warning, until one day you reach for the memory and find only a blurry outline where the detail used to be.
Those photos are framed now and hanging on the wall in our bedroom. I get to see them every single day.
That is exactly why I do what I do. It’s exactly why I created Petite Creek Sessions.

Petite Creek Sessions are a limited summer offering from Moments & Memories Photography, designed around the magic of a child in summer and the kind of unhurried, everyday moments that become the ones you treasure most.
Sessions take place at a beautiful creek location in Richmond, IL with soft, natural light that makes summer family photos feel warm, timeless, and genuinely alive.
Think bare feet in the water, kids exploring rocks, siblings splashing each other, and parents actually relaxing for once because there’s nothing to manage and nowhere to be.
It’s an experience as much as it is a photo session, and most families tell me it ends up feeling like one of their favorite summer evenings.
These are not posed, stiff, everyone-look-at-the-camera sessions. They are real, relaxed, and built entirely around letting your family just be together while I capture everything that makes this season of your life worth remembering.
Petite Creek Sessions are a perfect fit if:
You have kids who love being outside and would happily spend an evening by the water.
You’ve been wanting fun summer family photos that actually feel like your family.
You want images that are warm, natural, and emotional rather than perfectly posed and stiff.
You’re ready to stop saying “we should really do photos this summer” and actually do it.
These sessions are designed for families with children from early grade school to teenagers who are in the thick of the good stuff: the messy, magical, goes-so-fast years that deserve to be documented before they quietly become the years you’re looking back on.
If that’s you, keep reading. Petite Creek Sessions are located in Richmond, IL and are a short, scenic drive for families coming from Barrington Hills, Crystal Lake, Rockford, and the surrounding areas.
If you’ve been looking for fun summer family photos somewhere that feels a little different from the usual park or forest preserve, this is it!
This is one of the most common questions I get, and I love it because getting this right makes such a difference in how your photos feel. Here’s my simple guide for creek session outfits:
Coordinate, don’t match. The goal is for your family to look like they belong together, not like they ordered matching outfits from the same website. Choose a color palette and let everyone interpret it in their own way. Different textures, different shades of the same tone, and a mix of patterns and solids all work beautifully together.
Stick to neutral and earthy tones. Think creams, taupes, warm whites, soft tans, sage green, dusty rose, and light earthy browns. These tones photograph beautifully in natural light and feel timeless in your finished images. Even lighter earthy tones work wonderfully for a creek setting.
Keep it effortless and elevated. You don’t need to be formal, but you also don’t need to be casual. Think linen, soft cotton, flowy fabrics, and simple silhouettes. The kind of outfit that looks like you got dressed intentionally without trying too hard.
Skip the logos and neon. Graphic tees, bold brand logos, and bright neon colors will pull focus away from the people in your photos and date your images quickly. Keep it simple and let your family be the focal point.
Go barefoot if you can. Creek sessions are made for bare feet in the water, and honestly, nothing looks more natural or more like summer. If you prefer water shoes, that’s completely fine, just know they’ll be in the photos and choose a simple, neutral pair over anything too bold or chunky.
A note for mamas specifically: wear something you feel beautiful in! Not something you’re tugging at all evening. You deserve to feel good in these photos, because you are going to be looking at them for a very long time.

I know that “what actually happens” is the question most moms are quietly wondering but don’t always ask, so let me walk you through it.
Before your session, I’ll send you everything you need to feel prepared: outfit guidance, tips for getting your kids ready without the meltdown, and anything else that will help your evening run smoothly. You will not show up wondering what to do. I take care of that part.
During your session, I’ll guide you through gentle prompts that create real moments instead of stiff poses. I’m not going to line everyone up and ask you to say cheese. Instead, I’ll give your family things to do together: exploring, little ones being carried, big kids running jumping and splashing, parents sneaking a quiet moment together while the kids do their thing. The magic tends to happen in between the directions, and I know exactly how to find it.
After your session, we’ll sit down together over zoom and choose the images that feel most like your family. Then we’ll turn them into something real: prints, albums, and wall art that live in your home where you can see them every day. Because these photographs are not meant to live on a hard drive. They are meant to be part of your story.
Sessions take place at sunrise and sunset, when the light is soft, warm, and completely dreamy. This is the sweet spot for outdoor summer family photos and it’s worth every minute of the slightly early wakeup or slightly later bedtime.
Spots are extremely limited. This is an intentional, boutique offering and I only take a small number of families each season so that every session gets my full attention and care.
Petite Creek Sessions are located in Richmond, IL and serve families from the surrounding areas including Barrington Hills, Crystal Lake, Rockford, and beyond. If you’re willing to make the drive, I promise it is worth it.
One Last Thing.
I didn’t bring my tripod to our session last summer 😔. This means I’m not in a single photo from that evening, and I think about that more than I ever expected to.
Get in the photos, mama! Hire someone. Let yourself be part of the story, because your kids need to see you in it. Not just behind the scenes of their childhood but right there inside of it, exactly as you are right now in this season.
This summer, please get in the photos! All of you.
You will be so glad you did.
Waitlist families get first access before booking opens to the public on June 15th, and spots will go quickly. Join the wait list HERE and I’ll be in touch with everything you need to know.
I’d love to put together a custom summer session just for your family! If a full family session is something that would be more your thing, I’d love to help make your dream session come true!
This summer deserves to be remembered!
All the best,
Jessie
