When to Book Fall Family Photos (Before Your Favorite Dates Are Gone)

If you’re hoping to schedule fall family photos in Barrington, Crystal Lake, McHenry County, Lake Geneva, Richmond, Rockford, or the surrounding Chicago suburbs, here’s what you need to know before the busiest season of the year.

Every October, moms in these areas have the exact same realization.

“Wait, I meant to book fall photos. What happened?”

If that’s you right now, take a breath. You’re not behind but you do need to start taking action.

So let’s answer the question everyone’s asking: when should you actually book fall family photos?

The short answer: sooner than feels necessary.

Why Fall Family Photos Book Up So Fast

Here’s the thing nobody tells you. As a Maternity, Newborn and Family Photographer, I personally only take four to five sessions a month. On purpose!

That’s not a humble brag, it’s the whole point. It means the family I’m photographing gets my actual, full attention. Not a rushed twenty minutes squeezed between two other shoots, and not a “show up whenever, wear whatever, we’ll figure it out” kind of session.

Fall math gets tight, fast:

  • Fall is the most requested season
  • Add in the fall newborns to my calendar
  • A good chunk of my calendar goes to repeat clients before the season even opens up

Add all that together and yeah, the spots go quick! Sometimes faster than moms expect, which is usually the part that catches people off guard.

So When Should You Book Fall Family Photos in Northern Illinois?

If you’re hoping for a fall family session in Barrington, Crystal Lake, Richmond, Rockford, or Lake Geneva, I recommend reaching out by July or August for the best availability.

I know, I know. It’s ninety degrees and you’re thinking about pool days and the end of summer push to get to everything on that summer bucket list before school starts back, not peak foliage.

But booking early isn’t about rushing you into anything. It’s about giving you options instead of leftovers. It means we get to actually pick a date and time that fits your family, instead of scrambling for whatever’s still open in September.

What Booking Early Actually Gets You

This is where I’ll be honest about something. There are plenty of photographers who will let you book two weeks out, pick your own outfits off Pinterest, and hand you a download link the next day. That’s a fine option if that’s what you’re looking for.

That’s just not what I do.

When you book your fall family photos with me, you get:

  • A planning call where we talk through timing, location, and what this season actually feels like for your family
  • Personal wardrobe guidance, so you’re never guessing what to put your kids in at 11pm the night before
  • A guided viewing appointment after your session, not just a gallery link dropped in your inbox
  • The option to turn your favorites into heirloom albums or wall art designed to actually live in your home

Planning creates freedom. That’s not just something I say, it’s the whole philosophy behind how I run sessions. When the wardrobe, the timing, and the experience are already handled, you get to just show up and be present with your family.

“But What If My Family Isn’t Photogenic?”

Every family thinks this about themselves. Every single one.

Maybe your husband would rather do literally anything else. Maybe your toddler has never once cooperated for a photo in their life. Maybe you’re picturing an hour of “everybody look here, now smile, now hold still.”

Good news: that’s not what a session with me looks like!

Fall sessions are relaxed and led by your family (mostly the kids), not by a pose list taped to my clipboard. We follow your kids’ energy instead of fighting it. And almost always, the moments that end up meaning the most are the ones that happen between the planned shots, not during them.

Ready to Get on my Fall Calendar?

If you’ve been meaning to book a family photographer in McHenry County for fall, this is your sign to actually do it!

With only a handful of fall family photo sessions available each month, waiting even a few extra weeks can be the difference between getting your ideal date and watching the season slip by again.

Fall doesn’t last long! Your family’s story deserves to be captured while the light and color are exactly right, not squeezed in after the fact.
